Keys to Defeat the Enemy: Jehovah Nissi

A Key to Defeat the Enemy:

Jehovah Nissi

1.  Know your Enemy

Ephesians 6:12 NKJV says,
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

The first key to defeat the enemy is knowing who the real enemy is. We must remember that we are not truly fighting with people, whether they are family, friends, coworkers, or strangers. These individuals are being influenced to “fight” against us. The real enemy is the devil. However, there’s no need to worry. I want to share an encouraging message that the Lord revealed to me concerning my battle that I believe will help you as well.

2. A Key to Defeat the Enemy:

The second key to defeat the enemy is to know the proper strategy to win. I believe the Lord revealed this key to me in His name,

Jehovah Nissi.

While praying, I felt God reminding me of His name, Jehovah Nissi. So, I decided to study this name, and it was a blessing for me. Now, I want to share it with you. In Exodus 17:8-16, we see the first mention of Jehovah Nissi.

Amalek, an enemy of Israel, began to attack them. However, the Israelites were not ready for battle because they had just left Egypt as slaves and were wandering in the wilderness. Moses asked Joshua to choose some men to fight Amalek while he went to the top of a nearby hill with the rod of God in his hand.

Aaron and Hur went with Moses and realized that Israel would win only if Moses held the rod high. But when Moses grew tired, Amalek would gain the upper hand.

To help Moses, the men found a stone for him to sit on and held up his hands with the rod of God until sunset. Thanks to this, Joshua and the Israelites won the battle. After the victory, Moses built an altar and named it Jehovah Nissi.

Enemy-occupied territory---that is what this world is. Christianity is the story of how the rightful King has landed, you might say landed in disquise, and is calling us to take part in a great campaign of sabatoge.

-C. S. Lewis

Jehovah Nissi.

In Hebrew, Jehovah means

  • The one and only true God,
  • the one and only existing God.

In Hebrew, Nissi means

  • a standard or banner,
  • a sail, a sign, a Rally Point, or a signal.

Moses named the altar Jehovah Nissi, which means “the Lord is my banner.” This name, Jehovah Nissi, represents a standard sign, rally point, or signal. It also signifies that God is our defender and protector.

In history, footmen carried and raised flags to represent who they stood for. We wouldn’t want to fight against our own people. Today, when we raise our banner, Jehovah Nissi, we are declaring that we are with God Jehovah, the only true existing God. He is our banner, and we stand with HIM.

3. Write down the details and recite them.

After Joshua and his army defeated Amalek and his people, the Lord instructed Moses to write down the details of the battle in a book and recite them to Joshua. Moses was to emphasize that God had won the battle. All Moses had to do was lift up the rod of God and declare that God was his Lord and Savior, and they would emerge victorious. However, they could potentially lose if they failed to lift up Jehovah Nissi, their banner and symbol of their faith.

I have had enemies coming at me right and left. Beginning in 2014 with my health. Then again, in 2015, I made decisions for the Lord that leaders were not in agreement with. Again, in 2018, with family. In 2020, my immediate family and of course, we all battled COVID. In 2021, false accusations were hurled at me, with more family turned against me.

If you and I look at the problem, if we look at the “enemies” to magnify them, we will allow them to have victory over us.

I don’t have a rod of God like Moses. However, I do have the Word of God and His promises. If I lift up God and HIS word keeping my eyes on the one true existing God, I will defeat the true Enemy. I am confident that I will emerge victorious, and I’m really excited about it. You know the feeling, right?

Isaiah 59:19 says,

“So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the West, his glory from the rising of the sun when the Enemy shall come in like a flood, The Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him.”

A flood is over the top of your head where you feel like you’re drowning. When the Enemy has come in like a flood, “Kara” shall lift up a standard against him? Does the Word say that when the Enemy comes in like a flood, <insert your name here> will lift up the standard against him?

No, it says the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against the Enemy. Remember, Jehovah Nissi means standard, Banner, sign, sail, signal, or Rally Point to be lifted up. God the standard, God my banner. The Spirit of the Lord will raise a standard against my Enemy. We know that even though it seems people are against us, the Enemy is influencing them to fight against us.

Another scripture came to my mind. John 12:32 says,

“And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.”

When we lift up Jesus, we declare that He is our Banner and our standard. By keeping our eyes on Him and lifting Him up (praising and magnifying HIM), we can achieve victory. Our testimony and victory will then draw others to Him. As stated in Revelations 12:11, we are made Overcomers by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony.  When we lift up Jesus, He draws people to Him.

Moses lifted the rod of God as a symbol of his faith and trust in God’s power. Similarly, we may not have a physical rod, but we have The Word of God to guide us. By lifting the rod against his enemy and keeping his eyes on God, Moses achieved victory. The place where this happened was named Jehovah Nissi, which means “the Lord is my Banner”. God instructed Moses to write down the events in a book and share it with the people as a reminder of His power and faithfulness.

If I could borrow your time for a few more seconds, I would like to share one more part of this precious revelation.

The Song of Solomon 2:4 says, “He brought me to the banqueting house, And his banner over me was love.” This reminds us of God’s love for us and how He welcomes us to His table even in the presence of our enemies.

Furthermore, Psalms 23:5a says, “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.” This means that even when we face challenges and difficulties, God provides for us and protects us.

Combining these two scriptures, we can understand that God invites us to His table, where He lifts His Banner of love over us, even in the presence of our enemies. May this truth strengthen and bless you and heal any brokenness in your heart today. Remember, His Banner over you says, “I love you”.
